My St. Patty’s Beer o’ The Week

Posted by David on March 27, 2009

I only missed posting this by, oh…… 10 days. Oops. But as they say, “It’s better late than never”. The beer of the week (LAST week) is the only beer suitable for St. Patty’s Week: Guinness Extra Stout.

Dark, malty and rich, Arthur Guinness’ original and best brew, his Extra Stout, has tastes of oatmeal and coffee. Excellent at slightly warmer temps (45-55 F) aka cellar temps. Not for the faint of heart, weak taste buds, or in warm climates. Excellent stout, and an excellent choice anytime from November through March.

Happy belated St. Patrick’s Day!!!

Flying Dog’s "Doggie Style" Classic Pale Ale

Posted by David on March 27, 2009

OK, OK. I’m 3 posts behind. So I haven’t been drinking too much beer lately. So sue me. Anyway…

I bought this ale strictly based on walking past it at work. Come on, DOGGIE STYLE!!!! Turns out to be a terrific little ale from the Denver, CO micro-brewery.

Very smooth, hoppy but not bitter and very, very drinkable. I highly recommend it to any beer enthusiast.

BELL’S PORTER

Posted by David on March 6, 2009

BELL’S PORTER

This week’s beer is tried and true; Bell’s Porter, one of the Kalamazoo Brewery’s best winter brews. Based on the fact that most of Bells’ beers are very complex in flavor, I was surprised at how simple this particular brew was.
Bell’s Porter has a very notably nutty flavor right from the onset, and that very rich nuttiness continues all the way through. With a slightly bitter finish and simple tones, this is fantastic drinking for anytime from late fall through very early spring. With experience of darker beers tasting better at a cellar temperature (45-55 F), I tried this beer warm. Perhaps drinking cold will enhance flavors. All in all, an average porter.
