Monday Beer Review of The Week: Yuengling Traditional Lager

Posted by David on July 5, 2010

I have a tradition that I have been following for many years, whenever I go east of Ohio; especially to Pennsylvania, I have to have a Yuengling lager at least three times. Yuengling is one of my favorite lagers of all times, so when my friend offered me one after doing some work, how could I pass it up. I am always surprised by the lager’s super smooth taste that is a bit bold, but not over the top and no bitter after taste. The combination cluster and cascade hops give a that very slight sweet-sour notes that become rounded out as the caramelized malts hit your pallet. I personally love the light amber color of this beer when it is poured into pilsner glass, it gives you a hint towards the rich flavor profile gives off the sweet perfume of this beer. I find this Yuengling to be one of the best examples of a traditional lager, it uses classic ingredients to build a very distinctive flavor profile that is bold, but not over powering. This is a very good stand-by beer for those of our readers on the east coast and one that should be hunted down and tried by the rest of our readers.

Wednesday Beer Of The Week: Harp Lager

Posted by David on May 13, 2009

This week I picked up a six pack of one of my favorite beers to keep around the beer frig, Harp Lager. This is another of the Irish import Lagers brewed by those great folks at the Guinness. I really love the smooth barley flavor that you get while drinking Harp and the nice foam head helps to keep the beer very cold and smooth. The aroma of wheat will hit your pallet as you are drinking, which helps to enhance the barley flavors in the delicious lager. This is my favorite beer to either have after cutting grass on a hot summer day or to sit around a bon-fire with friends just passing the time with stories and laughter. I would recommend that everyone should give this beer a try, even if you are not a fan of the Great Northern style of lagers; Harp is at least in this reviewers mind one of the best commercial examples of the style of beer.

Beer Review Of The Week: Wild Blue

Posted by David on February 24, 2009

Earlier in the week, I ran across a beer called Wild Blue. My initial assessment was that this beer was a decent novelty beer, something that is cute and tasty once in a while. However, as I dove deeper into the beer, it came across as one of the many tasteless American lagers. When poured, this beer has a very weak head that disappears completely. The beers flavor, while very much blueberry, the actual lager portion has a very weak flavor. I am wondering as I think about the flavor of this beer if it isn’t one of the weaker American beers with blueberry flavor and color added for effect. I really had wanted to like this beer and while I did finish a six-pack of the beer, I would not buy it again.
