Monday Beer Review of The Week: Yuengling Traditional Lager

Posted by David on July 5, 2010

I have a tradition that I have been following for many years, whenever I go east of Ohio; especially to Pennsylvania, I have to have a Yuengling lager at least three times. Yuengling is one of my favorite lagers of all times, so when my friend offered me one after doing some work, how could I pass it up. I am always surprised by the lager’s super smooth taste that is a bit bold, but not over the top and no bitter after taste. The combination cluster and cascade hops give a that very slight sweet-sour notes that become rounded out as the caramelized malts hit your pallet. I personally love the light amber color of this beer when it is poured into pilsner glass, it gives you a hint towards the rich flavor profile gives off the sweet perfume of this beer. I find this Yuengling to be one of the best examples of a traditional lager, it uses classic ingredients to build a very distinctive flavor profile that is bold, but not over powering. This is a very good stand-by beer for those of our readers on the east coast and one that should be hunted down and tried by the rest of our readers.

Monday Beer Review of The Week: Budweiser Light Lime

Posted by David on June 16, 2010

I am a total skeptic about any of the Budweiser products, but I am a fan of their American Ale, so when a friend brought over a six pack of Budweiser Light Lime I thought I would give it a try. I must say that it actually had a good flavor to it and I was able to drink a couple of them with out getting that heavy “drinking with friends” feeling that can sometimes sneak up on you when you have had four of five beers. While the predominant flavor of this beer was the lime, the smoother rice and barley flavors were still present. I would have say this may become another of my “going out” beers, we all have two or three beers that we like that are fairly cheap at the our local watering hole, where we can have a couple of beers with our friends and not break the bank. This is definitely not the higher shelf beers that I have become accustomed to in recent years, but it doesn’t have have a bad taste, it is very smooth and I can live with the strong lime flavor as I am an avid Gin and Tonic drinker as well. This is actually a Budweiser lager that I would actually say is pretty middle of the road and a good bar standby beer, especially during these warmer summer months.

Monday Beer Review Of The Week: Pabst Blue Ribbon (PBR)

Posted by David on June 1, 2010

This weekend was Memorial Day festivities and one of the parties I went was serving Pabst Blue Ribbon (PBR), I will admit that this beer has a special place in my heart, because it was one of the low-cost beers that we drank in college when money was tight. But now that my beer pallet has become more refined and I am drinking beer for taste and flavor, I realize that PBR really is not the best of beers. It is one of the few American owned breweries, but the beer they produce is quite flavorless and very weak. While you can suck these down all day and not get wasted, the completely weak flavor is a killer for me. PBR calls this a pilsner, but it lack the characteristics of a good pilsner. I am going to leave it be with PBR and move on.

Monday Beer Review Of The Week: Heineken Light

Posted by David on April 5, 2010

I have been a fan of the Heineken lager for many years now, to be honest it a great beer to have while you are out at a place that maybe sketchy on its beer selection, because Heineken always puts out a consistently great lager that goes well with most dishes. This week, I am reviewing a beer that I ran across completely by accident, because one of my brother-in-laws bought and popped it into the frig while we were on vacation. Heineken Light is really the same flavored beer as the regular; however, it is lower in calories. This is one of those rare findings a light beer with the same flavor as the original, but let us moves on to the actual flavor it. Heineken Light has a very distinctive hopps flavor found in many pilsners, but at the end, it has a hint of sweetness that is very refreshing. Heineken Light is a good beer, but it is a very good light beer and one that I would have at a bar I did not know every well.

Beer Review of The Week: Modelo especial

Posted by David on March 22, 2010

I had Modelo about three half years ago while in Mexico and to be honest, I had forgotten how smooth and mellow this lager was. I recently picked up a six-pack of it since I had not had it in a really long time, I was pleasantly surprised by a very smooth taste, while the flavors are not very pronounced this pilsner does not have the bitter or sour after-taste that many pilsners have. The flavors of the beer are similar to that of Dos Equis or Corona, but with a milder flavor that you can enjoy much longer. This is a really tasty beer to have sitting in the cooler when some friends are over or hanging in the refrigerator for Fiesta Night dinner with the family and with a price tag of about $8.00 for a six-pack it is reasonably priced and will not break the bank which is a good thing these days.

Monday Beer Revie of The Week: Leinenkugel’s Creamy Dark Lager

Posted by Gino on December 14, 2009

Ultra Malty Lager with enough hops to taste bitter, yet smooth. This beer is no where close to a stout, but that is OK with me; defined taste, great smell, and powerful after taste, this is my favorite Leine’s brew to date!

Tasty out of the bottle, but even better in a mug. This beer is better slightly cool rather than cold; the flavors get lost when the brew is held below 40 degrees.

Drinkability: 8 out of 10
Flavor: 7 out of 10
Refreshness: 6 out of 10!!!
Smell: 8 out of 10
Price: $6.99 for a 6-pack, right on par for this type of beer; 8 out of 10
Overall: 8 out of 10. My personal favorite Leine’s brew to date!

Monday Beer Review of The Week: Leinenkugel’s Classic Amber Lager

Posted by Gino on December 7, 2009

Very smooth and caramelly, the most notable tastes are the malts. Exceptionally smooth, especially when drank from a frosty mug. Very well developed flavors with caramel and malted barley as the primary tastes. This amber lager TASTES like an ale; slightly more hoppy than malty, this beer is not bitter at all, yet crisp enough to be smooth and balanced. Malt to hop ratio – 60:40 malt.

Drinkability: 8 out of 10
Flavor: 8 out of 10
Refreshness: 7 out of 10
Smell: 8 out of 10
Price: $6.99 for a 6-pack, right on par for this type of beer; 8 out of 10
Overall: 8 out of 10.

Monday Beer Review Of The Week: Leinenkugel’s Red Lager

Posted by Gino on December 4, 2009

Nice, crisp flavor with strong hoppy notes. This beer actually tastes better out of the 12-oz long neck than from a frosty mug; bitter, yet smooth.

I can really taste the “red” AND the “lager” in Leinenkugel’s Red Lager. The malts are dominated by wheat, with some barley notes. Very drinkable… Clearly this is a lager. The taste is powerful on the front, and have a very light after taste. Very balanced.

Drinkability: 7 out of 10
Flavor: 6 out of 10
Refreshness: 8 out of 10!!!
Smell: 5 out of 10
Price: $6.99 for a 6-pack, right on par for this type of beer; 8 out of 10
Overall: 7 out of 10. Very balanced lager. Great for football.

Monday Beer Review Of The Week: Miller Chill

Posted by David on October 6, 2009

Miller ChillSo, I was in hurry earlier this week when I was at the grocery store picking up a few things for dinner and I didn’t have a chance to think about beer style I wanted to try, instead I just grabbed a beer I hadn’t tried. I was mildly surprised by Miller’s Chill, I normally hate most “light” beers because they are light on flavor. Chill actually has an ok taste, though it wouldn’t be my first choice of beer by any stretch. It would be a descent beer to drink on at a party or while out at a social event. Chill has a mild alcohol content at 4.2%, which isn’t too bad for a pale beer. I doubt that I would buy this again to keep in my beer fridge, but I would definitely consider if I was going over to a party or hanging out with the boys.

Monday Beer Review Of The Week: Labatt Blue

Posted by David on July 27, 2009

Labatt Blue

Labatt Blue is one of the common import beers from our Canadian friends to the north. Blue is a classic example of north American lagers. It pours with a very weak head and lacks the flavor of its European brethren. It does a very crisp and clean flavor profile, but the lack of depth in flavor hurts the beer overall. There isn’t too much too say about this beer, unfortunately it lack of flavor and depth leave something to be desired. However, this beer is a great choice though if you are going out with friends and want to drink some cheap beer.
